How It Started
I purchased my Google Pixel 9a on 25 April 2026. On 22 September 2026, the phone was accidentally damaged.
The display was broken. Roughly half of the screen was black and the remaining visible portion was still displaying an image, but touch input was completely unavailable. The outer frame was also visibly bent.
My first concern was whether the phone's internal system was still functioning. Before taking it anywhere for repair, I therefore tested as many functions as I could without being able to use the touchscreen.
What Still Worked
I immediately checked Face Unlock. It worked and the phone successfully unlocked.
Since I could not use the touchscreen, I then tested the three physical buttons. I connected the charger and confirmed that the device responded to charging.
I also long-pressed the power button to launch Gemini and spoke to it. Voice interaction worked as well.
Finally, I connected the phone to my Android Auto setup using a cable and confirmed that it connected and worked.
The battery eventually drained and the phone switched off. The following day, 23 September 2026, I took it to the F1 service centre in Ghaziabad.
F1 Service Centre, Ghaziabad
I went to the F1 service centre in Ghaziabad because it was listed as a Pixel walk-in service centre.
As soon as I handed the phone to the receptionist, I was told that the repair would cost approximately ₹50,000–₹60,000.
This immediately surprised me. I had already looked at the published component prices and understood the display and frame costs to be substantially lower than that.
I asked for a proper breakup of the estimated repair cost. I was told that I would first have to pay ₹850 for the diagnosis/inspection.
I had not expected this experience from Google for a phone that was only about five months old. I was not asking for a free repair; I wanted to understand what was damaged and how the quoted amount had been calculated.
The ₹850 Inspection
After some discussion, I paid the ₹850 inspection fee and left the phone with the service centre for diagnosis.
Approximately two hours later, a technician came back with the phone and told me that the repair would cost more than ₹60,000.
I again asked for the complete breakup. I questioned how the amount could become more than ₹60,000 when the visible damage was to the display and frame.
I was told that the motherboard would also need to be replaced, along with the battery and other charges.
The Official Repair Estimate
The final estimate provided by the service centre was ₹64,820.76 including taxes.
The figures below are transcribed from the official estimate issued by the service centre.
| Item | Unit Price | CGST | SGST | Total Incl. Tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frame / Enclosure Assembly | ₹4,551.14 | ₹409.60 | ₹409.60 | ₹5,370.34 |
| Battery | ₹1,588.58 | ₹142.97 | ₹142.97 | ₹1,874.52 |
| Display Assembly | ₹6,646.95 | ₹598.23 | ₹598.23 | ₹7,843.41 |
| Motherboard / Logic Board | ₹40,010.21 | ₹3,690.19 | ₹3,690.19 | ₹48,382.48 |
| Labour | ₹1,144.07 | ₹102.97 | ₹102.97 | ₹1,350.01 |
| Official Total | ₹64,820.76 | |||
The estimate therefore included a motherboard / logic-board replacement at ₹48,382.48 including tax, in addition to the display, frame, battery and labour.
The Motherboard Diagnosis
This was the part of the diagnosis that I found most difficult to understand.
Before visiting the service centre, I had personally tested Face Unlock, the physical buttons, charging, Gemini through the power-button interaction, and Android Auto. The phone had also previously been operating normally apart from the physical damage to the display and frame.
I therefore asked how the service centre could determine that the motherboard was bent. I specifically asked them to open the phone and show me the motherboard.
After another wait of approximately an hour, the technician came back with the motherboard and placed it on the table, stating that it was bent.
From what I could see, I did not agree that the motherboard was bent. I challenged the assessment and asked them to demonstrate the claimed bend by comparing it with a new motherboard.
The Comparison That Never Happened
The technician told me that they would bring a new motherboard so that we could compare the two components.
The centre manager also became involved in the discussion. After another wait of approximately 15 minutes, the technician returned and told me that the service centre did not actually have a replacement motherboard in stock.
This was particularly frustrating because I had been told that the phone would be handled and repaired the same day, while the major component being quoted in the estimate was not available at the centre.
What I Did Instead
I decided not to proceed with the quoted motherboard replacement and took my phone back.
I contacted third-party vendors and sourced an original display and replacement frame in Karol Bagh.
Independent Repair Cost
- Original display: ₹8,000
- Frame: ₹2,500
- Total: ₹10,500
The local repair shop did not charge me separately for the repair work.
The motherboard was not replaced. The phone was repaired with the display and frame, and I was able to use the device again.
Why This Experience Stayed With Me
What made the experience particularly disappointing for me was the contrast with an earlier experience I had with Apple.
In 2019, when I had an out-of-warranty MacBook issue, Apple diagnosed the device without charging me for the diagnosis. With this Pixel repair, I had to pay ₹850 just to obtain the diagnosis, and I still felt that I had to repeatedly question and intervene in the inspection process.
I understand that different companies and service partners can have different policies. My point is simply that this was my personal experience, and it significantly changed my perception of the Pixel ownership experience.
My Decision
This experience ultimately made me move away from the Pixel platform and buy an iPhone again.
I do not claim that this experience represents every Pixel owner or every service centre. It is my own experience, documented with the exact figures from the official estimate and the subsequent independent repair.
However, based on what happened to me, I personally would not recommend a Pixel to someone who is primarily concerned about the after-sales repair experience in India.
In my family, this experience has also meant that none of us plan to buy another Pixel.
